Read how combinations are counted

A paytable connects symbols to the game’s rules. Look for the number of matching symbols required, the direction in which they are counted and whether the game uses fixed lines, selectable lines, ways or clusters. Similar-looking reel screens can apply different evaluation rules.

For an invented example, imagine a game whose rules require three matching symbols on a stated line, starting at the leftmost reel. Three matching pictures scattered across the screen would not necessarily meet that condition. The line and starting position matter as much as the picture.

Also check whether displayed awards are expressed in credits, stake multiples or another unit. An example from a guide is not the paytable for a game in the app.

A wild substitutes only where allowed

A wild can replace another symbol when the game rules allow it. Suppose a sample line shows STAR–WILD–STAR. It counts as three stars only if the wild can substitute for that symbol on those reels and that line.

Read the exceptions. A wild may not substitute for scatters, may appear only on particular reels, or may have a feature such as expanding or remaining in place. None of those behaviours should be assumed from the word “wild” alone.

Before interpreting a combination, check the symbol definition and any separate feature rules.

A scatter has its own conditions

A scatter may be counted independently of ordinary lines, but its exact function depends on the game. It can have a specified count requirement, a separate award, a feature trigger or restrictions on where it appears.

For example, a help panel might require three scatters for a feature. Seeing two does not establish that a feature is due on the next round. An animation or a near miss is not a substitute for the published trigger condition.

Do not assume scatters in two different games work identically, even if their pictures look alike.

A short paytable checklist

  • Identify the method used to count combinations.
  • Check the minimum symbol count and required starting position.
  • Read wild substitutions and their exceptions.
  • Read scatter and feature conditions separately.
  • Confirm the units used for displayed awards.
